1836 Original Charcoal Drawing of a “Boy with Whip” in Arden, Ontario for sale

1836 Original Charcoal Drawing of a "Boy with Whip." This original charcoal drawing shows a boy holding a riding whip/crop in one hand and small picture of a horse jumping in the other. He's dressed in typical fashion for young male aristocrats in the early 19th century. Boys wore gowns until the age of between 2-8 in 19th century Europe and learning to ride a horse for leisure sports such as hunting would have been a rite of passage for young boys at the time. It's a delightful and skillfully executed drawing reminiscent of children's portraits made famous by Thomas Gainsborough decades earlier. The drawing is displayed in an early moulded walnut frame with a glass overlay and decorative gilt inside border. Dated and signed. Circa 1836. Unknown artist.
Length: 15″ (38 cm)
Width: 13 1/4″ (34 cm)
Thickness: 2 1/4″ (5 cm)
The drawing is in excellent condition with no damage other than an overall yellowing of the paper, common for drawings that are close to 200 years old. The walnut frame has a small 1″ nick on the upper right hand corner.
