This antique oil on canvas of a brig (sailboat with 2 square rigged masts) features the boat in full sail with its crew. Brigs were used as both naval warships and merchant vessels and were particularly popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries. The canvas has a faux finish wooden frame with a painted inscription which reads, "Briganto Nominato Il Veloce Cap.tn Gius Novaro da sa Remo Anno 1798." Roughly translated from Italian as, "a brig named "rapid" Captain (man's name) from Genoa in 1798." Although the painting is unsigned, it has been skillfully executed showing perfectly proportioned straight lines for the masts/ropes and with multi-layered, vibrant and muted tones of colour throughout. This painting is great for anyone who appreciates the beauty and elegance of antique boats.
