Pair of Georgian era silhouettes in Arden, Ontario for sale

Pair of Georgian era silhouettes
Pair of Georgian era silhouettes
$300

Pair of Georgian era silhouettes. Circa 1800 - 1810. Since only wealthy people could afford to have their portraits painted in oils, silhouette (profile) portraiture was the popular way to record an image of one's self or loved one. Silhouettes were highly popular from about 1790 to 1840 when the invention of the camera signaled the end of the silhouette as a widespread form of portraiture. Judging by the style of their clothing, these framed silhouettes of a man and woman (most likely husband and wife) were probably created during the very early 1800's. These silhouettes have extremely delicate and detailed gilt highlights, which provide details of the pair's clothing and accessories. The silhouettes have a gold-tone matte and are in their original wood frames. Sold as a pair.
Dimensions
The male portrait measures 5 inches (13 cm) by 6 inches (15.5 cm). The woman's portrait is slightly smaller and measures 4¾ inches (12.25 cm) by 5¾ inches (14.75 cm).
Condition
There are two faint stains on the background of the man's portrait but no issues with the woman's. The backs have been replaced at some point and the hanging loops seem fragile. Given that they are over 200 years old, these two pieces are in good condition and have great charm in spite of the signs of their great age.
