19th century mahogany cabinet. A superb open mahogany cabinet in the Empire style from Kent House in Kingston, Ontario, built c. 1877 for Rybert Kent by the architect John Power. The cabinet was custom made for the heritage house and has some of the classical features typical of Empire style. Four columns frame the outside top half with carved corinthian mouldings capping the columns. At the top of the cabinet are six finials. The two sides of the cabinet also have deep set mouldings. There are three narrow drawers that separate the bottom from the top. There are six removable shelves on the top portion which are secured with metal hooks with a metal bracket, allowing for flexible use of the space. The three bottom shelves are permanent. It's a rare example of early Canadian Empire furniture and would make a dramatic statement in any setting.
