1836 Original Charcoal Drawing of a "Boy with Whip." This original charcoal drawing shows a boy holding a riding whip/crop in one hand and small picture of a horse jumping in the other. He's dressed in typical fashion for young male aristocrats in the early 19th century. Boys wore gowns until the age of between 2-8 in 19th century Europe and learning to ride a horse for leisure sports such as hunting would have been a rite of passage for young boys at the time. It's a delightful and skillfully executed drawing reminiscent of children's portraits made famous by Thomas Gainsborough decades earlier. The drawing is displayed in an early moulded walnut frame with a glass overlay and decorative gilt inside border. Dated and signed. Circa 1836. Unknown artist.
